Apple Universe #56 Topics:
As you all know if you follow my blog, I went to the Halo 3 Pre-Launch party. Here is a little recap from my blog and an episode!
Robert Scoble picks me up at my house at 6:00. At around 6:40, we arrive at Microsoft in Silicon Valley! The line is there, but we get in quickly, and the party starts! Robert Scoble was my guardian, and we had a great time! Since Robert is really famous, he said hi to everyone, and then we hit the game floor! There were about 25 flat screen T.V’s in the room, each equipped with an x-box 360, and 4 controllers. Robert got his new camera, and he showed to everyone, and started clicking away! Robert’s photos are here. I meet so many new people, I can’t even explain how cool this was!
I just want to thank Robert Scoble for driving me to this awesome event! Photos have been posted on my Flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dbrusilovsky/

Wednesday, Sep 12, 2007Apple Universe Episode #48- 1 Million iPhones!
(350 downloads)Download this episode (19 min)
Apple Universe #48 Topics:
Apple yesterday announced it sold its one millionth iPhone yesterday, just 74 days after its introduction on June 29. iPhone combines three devices into one—a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod, and the best mobile Internet device ever—all based on Apple’s revolutionary multi-touch interface and pioneering software that allows users to control iPhone with just a tap, flick or pinch of their fingers.
Well that's it. Engadget revealed that iPhoneSIMfree's unlocking solution is up and running today, and they're now on sale (in fact, our Weblogs, Inc. brethren are giving them away as we speak). Hype, prices, and sketchy profiteering aside, what's done seems to be done. If you want your iPhone unlocked, have at it.
Toshiba has announced a prototype 1.8" HDD that fits 120 GB on a single platter via a breakthrough called Discrete Track Recording (DTR). The drive uses the same form factor currently used in Apple's iPod classic. Currently, Apple uses an 80 GB single-platter drive for its thinner model and a 160 GB dual-platter drive for its slightly thicker model. Toshiba's technology would allow single-platter models to achieve 120 GB densities, with a dual-platter option going as high as 240 GB. Toshiba plans to begin mass producing the drives in 2009.

Tuesday, Sep 04, 2007Apple Universe Episode #43- NBC stops selling on iTunes!
(216 downloads)Download this episode (18 min)
Apple Universe Episode #43 Topics:
Apple on Friday afternoon issued a press release confirming that it will indeed halt sales of NBC television shows through its ubiquitous iTunes download service beginning with the upcoming television season. The move, the company explained, follows NBC’s decision to not renew its agreement with iTunes after Apple declined to pay more than double the wholesale price for each NBC TV episode, which would have resulted in the retail price to consumers increasing to $4.99 per episode from the current $1.99.
With several iPhone unlocking methods gaining traction over the past week, the Associated Press has done some investigating into the legalities of the matter and is reporting that unlocking the phone for one's personal use appears to be legal. On the other hand, hackers who contrive such unlocking solutions with the intent to profit from them are likely to face legal problems. At least one of the companies hoping to make money by unlocking iPhones told the AP that it is hesitating after calls from lawyers representing AT&T, the exclusive U.S. wireless provider for iPhone.
Burglars smashed the front window of the Apple Inc.'s Saddle Creek retail store in Memphis, Tenn. Tuesday morning, making off with $25,000 worth of goods in less than a minute flat. The break-in was the third at an Apple retail store and fourth at an Apple facility this month, underscoring a brewing problem for the Cupertino-based company as it prepares to stock its retail outlets with millions of dollars in additional merchandise ahead of the holiday shopping season. ifoAppleStore reports that crooks smashed their way into the Saddle Creek Apple store at 4:22 a.m. Tuesday morning and within 60 seconds had stolen $25,000 worth of merchandise, including 10 iPhones, one iMac and six MacBook laptops.
Google took another step Friday in its continued attempts to improve its relationships with wire services, when it announced a program to host full articles from news agencies on Google News pages. Google News, a site in which Google aggregates links to articles published on news outlets’ Web sites, is generally valued by publishers who make money from online advertising and benefit from the traffic Google News sends to their sites.
iLounge points to new cases from Uniea which appear to be a case for the rumored iPod Nano. The case, described as the U-Suit Hard Protective Leather Case for New iPod, features a soft leather exterior, hard plastic interior with scratch-resistant inner lining, and a front hole sized for a roughly 2.3-inch screen and iPod nano-sized Click Wheel. Photos of the upcoming iPod Nano were leaked and later pulled at the request of Apple, and are expected to make their debut at Apple's September 5th media event.

CNET's Don Reisinger has a great article up about what may have been Steve's Master Plan: letting an iPhone unlock happen. Basically, Reisinger maintains two things: that Apple is a hardware company, and that AT&T was just a means to an end for them. If hackers are able to unlock the iPhone, Apple will lose a little bit (because they do get a small cut of service plans), but they'll still sell iPhones, and AT&T will lose everything. Jobs "did his part"-- he closed off the iPhone and declared an exclusivity deal. But now that we're on the verge of completely unlocked iPhones, Apple has no real incentive to cut it out. And that's exactly how it's played out-- Apple's recent iPhone update did pretty much nothing to close off the system, and as Reisinger says, it wasn't Apple knocking on the doors of those who are about to unlock the iPhone-- it was AT&T. The iPhone's unlocking will bring a rush of sales for Apple-- and a rush of sobbing from AT&T headquarters.
CAR magazine reported that Apple has already been working with Jaguar on control interfaces. According to Ian Callum, Jaguar's design director, the interior of the new Jaguar XF has design cues that are a direct result of work with Apple. Apparently, the start button pulses and buttons are in general kept to a minimum. It increasingly sounds like Apple is almost becoming an industrial design consultant. Though it would be interesting to know if Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ive are involved in any of this stuff, because it is their direction that gives actual Apple products so much of their characteristic elan.
Toyota has released an Apple iPod Integration Kit that works in all current Toyota and Lexus models. The kit, which is installed in the vehicle's glove box, connects Apple's iPod directly to the car's audio system and can also recharge the iPod's battery. Once connected, all of the iPod's functions can be controlled through the audio head unit or steering wheel mounted controls. The kit also uses the head unit's display for the iPod's text-readouts–such as track title, elapsed time, etc.
